Mission
To create a preferred destination in West Philadelphia for both international residents and cultural activities that encourages all participants, international and American, to believe in the goodness of one another and a lasting understanding that all people are essentially the same.

Top 4 Popular Ideas (by Votes):
• IHP will activate the Space and will maximize thematic utilization of the space
• Social media will be judiciously exploited for the benefit of IHP and its stakeholders
• Appropriate selection criteria in recruiting staff and residents will be exercised.
• More residents will be involved in the governance

Design that dissolves the Mess:

IHP will:
• sell off the current property (for > $15M),
• create an endowment,
• purchase the recently vacated West Philadelphia High School for a reasonable price,
• engage and co-opt the city, state, universities, corporate and community stakeholders in developing a “destination” in West Philadelphia through the nucleus of an international house campus with associated global village
• endow the new system with all the design elements that have identified and spelt out, and
• manage the transition by judiciously exploiting the current system while developing the new campus.

IHP will provide:

Everyone will feel special for coming to IHP. It will create this feeling through selectivity.

IHP will testify before Congress for visas for International students

IHP will engage in staff exchange among international houses. Including opportunity for staff to work abroad and foreign staff to come here?
IHP will send people out to recruit residents
A unique brand will be created that is going to be perceived independent of UPENN.
• It will portray IHP as community and not Penn auxiliary or residential housing; it will be conceived as an open space and not a closed community
Conferences will be organized

Additional offerings will include:

• Concierge service for residents
• Language courses with volunteer teachers
• Cultural projects (like Confucius Institute)
• West Philadelphia welcoming for art and culture e.g. International Cultural Programming, Visual Arts, Storytelling, and dance
• Welcoming Int’l and American students (airport pickup)
• Walk-in and participative environment
• Open to anywhere in the city; arcade; welcoming lobby
• Multi-lingual capability in staff
• Small library (donate books, take donations) [1]
• More residents involved in governing daily life [4]

• Mentoring program (mock UN); reach-out to high school students; Visitation to schools and other places for outreach and communications

Processes:

IHP will develop processes that will produce the above-mentioned outputs to achieve the objectives set forth in the mission of the organization:

• IHP will be established as a gateway:
o It will develop Branding; Hub; Nexus
o Constantly affirmed outreach to the community
o Make it likeable
o Promoting internationally
• Role of IHP as a hub will be to promote interaction with community to inspire and engage neighborhood
o It will challenge them with American culture beyond pop-culture e.g. connecting with documentaries, canvassing, face-to-face

• IHP will :
o reach overseas constituents with website, Wikipedia
o engage domestic students
o Get a credit for outreach
o Organize banner events for IHP,
o will involve partners
IHP will be an avenue for local and international alternative businesses and NGOs and it will:
• Franchise doing admirable international work
• Marquee quality arts programs
• Reach out and work with neighborhood orgs and businesses
• Have branches – hubs/satellites or relocate to separate site (where TBD)
• Develop international campus: Undergraduate, graduate, families and scholars

IHP will Exploit Social media and will let go of CTRL of information.
• TV/ Youtube/ Facebook/ LinkedIn/ All social media [4]/ Ted conference space/ forum [6]
• Smart phone App
• Internet, radio, webcast
• International newsletter/ wiki site for communication

Adding value to those with capacity to give will be perused by IHP. Other steps will be taken by:
• Investing in residents (alumni idea)
• Making strategic partnerships
• Creating outreach/networking events to build IHP family
• Creating international events
• Building audiences through other IHs
• Using ‘change of address’ to recommend IHP
• Using of the word ‘festival’ to bring people in
• Branding, cross-promotion, sponsorships (ex. PIFA)
• Facilitating art shows, sell arts, offer galleries and sales
• Scanning Philadelphia area and form strategic partnerships, join programs/benefits

In it’s endeavors, IHP will form Partnerships with:
• City
• Recruiters
• Universities/Schools
• Business
• State and local government

IHP will activate the Space and will:

• Beautiful space for events / weddings
• Place for sustaining relationships

• A way to keep in touch with IHP [1]
• Housing for anyone including families (multi generational)


IHP will provide services oriented to international residents that will include:
• Immigrations affiliates
• Franchise for passport and travel services
• Naturalization classes
• Travel Agency
• Currency exchange service, passports, visas
• Assistance in naturalization/ immigration issues

IHP will develop processes for:
• people to find IHP (branding) including creating awareness
• IHP to find people (recruitment) including for deciding who IHP wants and determining what IHP wants from people. (selecting and managing staff, residents and alumni)
• inviting people of special interest or achievement
• identifying, developing and managing partnerships, relationships as well as the businesses on site
• identifying channels (mini communities) through:
o The arts
o Civic engagement
• putting emphasis on programs with goal of international understanding, drawing on post-global media world, creating facilities for the aspiration engagement and exchange, creating forums, events that bring residents together, and developing partnerships

Structure/ Governance:

IHP Board of Directors / Operational Board of Directors will have members who:
• are Multi-disciplinary
• represent different aspects of society
• are passionate, energetic with belief in the mission
• Have experience, connections/ networks and time
• are capable/ willing to interact with communities
• are physically able to be “in touch”
• are Alumni board members
• have Post-service connection
• have prior connection with IHP or international experience

Management of IHP will have the following attributes:
• People who buy into mission – No IR/ D.+
• Forward thinking –See changes coming
• Have professional background – cultural practice
• Pays attention to financial reality (no margin, no mission)
• Proven willingness to experiment
• People with ability to interact with the residents
• Understanding of differences
• Encourages behavior

Characteristics of Organizational Structures
IHP will endow the organization with:
• Flexibility, adaptability [1] Learning and adapting
• Create a culture that enables learning, flexibility, adaptability
• Bottom up communication/ involvement
• Non-hierarchical structure
• Non-siloed
• Every function aimed at delivering the experience in a financially responsible way
• Feedback (multiple, regular advisory groups)
• Management system incorporating key performance indicators, measuring both the tangible and intangible factors

Inputs:

IHP will explore building Self-sustaining organization through its knowledge pool, facilities and multiple revenue streams including that from:
• Activating space (e.g. Portion of the building is Hotel for profit, Book store (international)/ gift store selling residents’ handiwork/ creative international products, Ice skating rink, Event rentals/ space rentals [3])
• Utilizing IHP resident talents (e.g. Summer camps taught by residents, Immersion language programs)
• Building an endowment built prior to building IHP
• Membership by residents is funded
